Mormonism's fascination with angels opens the door for occult experiences delivered at the hands of "bad angels." Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, was fascinated with occult practices throughout his lifetime. He was deeply involved in the occult in what former BYU Professor D. Michael Quinn called "folk magick."
Eventually that fascination led Smith into Freemasonry where he learned the occult temple ceremonies of the lodge and appropriated them for the Mormon Temple Ceremony. The Bible warns us that there are "false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." (2Co 11:13-14) Joseph Smith says the Angel Moroni appeared to him three years in a row at the time of the Autumnal Equinox. At first he appeared in his bedroom, promising he would lead him to gold plates. Eventually, according to Smith, he did so. What came out of those experiences is not only the Book of Mormon, but Mormonism itself. Mormonism claims that the Gospel of Christ was lost from the earth and that Joseph Smith (with the help of the Angel Moroni) restored it. However, the Gospel of Mormonism is so distinctive from established Christianity that it must be considered "another gospel." Most dangerous of all, the Bible says, is to believe an angel who comes to you with this kind of message. We are strictly warned not to believe such beings who come with "another gospel."
I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. (Gal 1:6-9) |
